Fabulous Fire Pits

by Abby Hoeffner, Living Magazine, Feb. 2009

Ahh, the open campfire, complete with marshmallows roasting on straightened hangers and stories told with crackling wood for background music. If you loved gathering with friends around open flames when you were at camp as a kid, then a fire pit might be a great addition to your back yard.

GAS OR WOOD

On a cool, early spring evening, nothing takes the chill out of the air faster than warm, flickering light from blue and orange flames. How those flames are powered is up to you.

A gas-powered fir pit offers the convenience of flames at the flip of a switch. However, one must keep in mind the initial cost of running the gas lines, plus the ongoing expense of the gas. Most gas powered fire pits have a base of lava rock out of which the fire leaps.

Purists often prefer a wood-burning fire pit and have the added advantage of authentic aromas. Hickory and oak provide a musical fire with plenty of popping and crackling. Add fragrant wood, such as mesquite or apple, for even more ambiance.

DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Fire pits are typically circular or sqaure with room for seating on all sides. The goal is to recreate the feeling of a campfire. Common building materials inclue brick, natural stone, interlocking pavers, madmade stone, stucco, and cast concrete.

The type of material you choose will heavily influence the style of your fire pit. For example, natural stone will have a casual feel, while brick and cast concrete combine for a more formal look.

SEATING

There are several ways to approach seating, but a cmbination of 2 or 3 types works best. Hardscaping can be designed as a long bench that wraps around the fire pit and will accommodate several people. However, brick and stone can be hard on the back, so outdoor cushions are a must.

Outdoor furniture is a flexible option because it can be rearranged to suit different needs. Use coordinating throw pillows to unify the hardscape benches and furniture. Large boulders, called moss rocks, can be integrated into the design for a great natural element. They will work as fun perches for children and add dimension to your landscape.

Since prehistoric times, humans have been fascinated with fire. In fact, psychologists say that watching flames puts the mind at rest. So instead of decompressing from a stressful day by catching the latest crime drama on television, unwind in your own back yard in front of dancing flames leaping from your new fire pit. It's an investment you and your family and friends are sure to enjoy for years to come.
